Drouillard Fire July 8th 2009

Fire broke out at the historic ADLER building in olde Ford City, most commonly known as Drouillard Rd.  The fire apparently started in an extension to the Adler Bakery at 992 Drouillard, which housed tenants.  When I arrived, while walking down an alley to the scene, power was shut off to the neighbourhood and adjacent neighbourhoods past Strabane Ave.

The Adler Baking Company bears a stone inscription at the top, indicating that it’s surely an old building.  The fire here however seemed to be entirely in an attachment to the main structure.

Possibly an owner or tenant of the building.  He was allowed inside to inspect by police and firefighters.

A strange sight to see Fire Chief Dave Fields on scene… in street clothes.

From the looks of it, everyone got out okay, and the old building may perhaps be salvagable.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the building isn’t too badly damaged. The Adler building will be an anchor for the rejuvenated Drouillard Road arts district (read: SoHo) one of these days…
