New at the University 2009:  the Centre for Engineering Innovation.  A friend from the University emailled me these colour renderings of the new Centre for Engineering Innovation.  The intersection in the lower left hand corner is where Wyandotte meets California (l-r).  The new academic facility is valued at $110 million dollars, and will be constructed to meet the Gold level of  Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

The University has a construction tender out right now for construction of new service tunnels from the existing tunnel network, to the location of the new building.  The tunnels are to be installed over the summer, and the first foundations of the building are to be laid in the fall.  Good news for many, although this comes at many folks’ former gradeschool’s expense (Prince of Wales).  More pics after the jump..

From California Street.

The interior will feature a living wall that connects to the HVAC system, similar to the one at the Medical Education Building.

A very well lit interior during the day.  I recall hearing that window panes will feature a type of heat storage/usage mechanism for building heating.

The CEI from the corner of Wyandotte and California.

They really should redesign the University’s logo. It looks for all the world like a juvinile rendering of a flacid cock n’ balls. It isn’t a very strong design to begin with although it can be said that it’s memorable. Of all the shapes a U and W could be made into…why that one?

Nit picking aside that is the most gorgeous building rendering I’ve ever seen!

i’m glad to see that the parking lot is at the back instead of at the front of the building. while i wish they would have preserved some elements of the grade school’s facade, the renderings do look pretty spectacular. any idea why they didn’t go for a parking structure instead of just a surface lot?

  • jaleco

That is gorgeous. Almost makes me want to go back to school again.

Windsor needs something shiny like this. A little sparkle always cheers me up when I am down. lol.

heh, but it already cost them $1.1 million to get this phallic logo!! I personally liked the old logo MUCH better

i’m still wondering about the parking garage m’self. they talked about it plentifully a few years back, but there’s been dead silence since.

Agreed on reusing the elementary school’s elements, I know they won’t use much, but I’m eager to see exactly what pieces from Prince of Wales they are going to incorporate into this design

it surely is a positive step toward rejuvenating the University!! I hope this is a sign of things to come

Jesus Fucking Christ. If they spent $1.1 million for that new logo…why didn’t they have a commitee vote on it. Did they have more than one choice? Didn’t they see that it looks like any number of lame things like saggy tits, droopy lop sided ass, let alone a flacid cock n’ balls?

God tell them to hire me. I could come up with 30 new designs to choose from. 1 new design a day for a month for a FRACTION of that. Geeze. Tell them to pay off my tiny credit card bill and I’ll be happy! 1.1 million are you fucking kidding me?

What artist did they pay that much to?

  • westerntragedy

granted, the 1.1m was for the entire ‘branding campaign’, including a redesigned website, new letterhead and such. but still…. that’s an outrageous price, and one of the points that the Faculty made about administrative fiscal mismanagement during their strike in the fall.

    Breathtaking!

The comments in this thread are, unfortunately, predictable and reduce the achievement of the University – get over Prince of Wales (any use of the facade of the elementary school would completely throw off the architectural visual unity of the design) and the acceptably decent logo and focus on the marvelously (green and sustainable) building coming our way.

I can’t wait to visit it after I graduate! :D I am proud!

That is beyond retarded. They also could have given the opportunity to the St.Clair Graphic Design department – the students…you know?

    That is…unbelievably fucking retarded.

Sorry but that…really pisses me off. What a waste of money. What on earth could warrent that kind of budget?

Notice how pretty much all of the figures in plan are female? Are they not taking this whole politically correctness thing too far? Everyone knows that few women are in the faculty of engineering. Don’t try to fabricate a Liberal influenced ideal utopia.
